Summary
Plop is a browser extension that replaces the file picker on websites that ask you to upload something. Everything it handles is processed locally on your own device. Plop has no server, no account, no analytics and no tracking. Nothing it reads is ever sent to the developer or to anyone else.
What Plop processes on your device
To do its job, Plop handles the following, entirely within your browser on your computer:
- Clipboard content. When the Plop window is open, Plop reads your clipboard so that an image, a piece of text or a file you just copied can be offered as an upload. It reads the clipboard only while its window is open in response to your own click or paste, never in the background.
- Files you select or pin. Files you choose, pin for reuse, or upload through Plop are kept in Plop's own extension storage on your device so they can be offered again later.
- Upload-related content on websites. On a page you visit, Plop looks at the upload control you clicked — the file input and its own settings, such as which file types it accepts and whether it takes more than one file — so that it can offer suitable files and hand your choice back to the page. When you open Plop with its keyboard shortcut, it notes which field has focus and where your cursor is in it, only so that what you pick goes into that field. Nothing the field contains is stored or sent anywhere.
- Your preferences. Whether Plop is enabled, and your chosen theme.
- Per-site settings. The websites on which you have chosen to turn Plop off.
What Plop never does
Plop does not sell, transmit, share or otherwise disclose your clipboard content, your files, your browsing history or any personal data — not to the developer, and not to any third party.
- No data is sent to any server. Plop has no backend of its own.
- No analytics, telemetry, advertising, cookies, fingerprinting or tracking of any kind.
- Plop does not read, collect or transmit the content of the pages you visit, the text you type into them, your form entries, your passwords or your cookies.
- Plop does not record, store or transmit your browsing history.
- Plop does not build a profile of you and does not share anything with advertisers, data brokers or analytics providers.
Where your data is kept
Everything Plop keeps is stored in Chrome's own storage for extensions, on your computer. Pinned and recent files are held in Plop's private extension storage, which websites cannot read, and which is kept when Plop updates. Very large files (over 25 MB) can still be uploaded through Plop but are not kept.
If you have Chrome profile sync switched on, Chrome may sync your Plop preferences and per-site settings between your own signed-in devices. That transfer is performed by Chrome, under Google's terms, between your devices — the developer of Plop has no access to it. Your clipboard content and your files are never synced and never leave the device they are on.
Permissions and why Plop asks for them
- Access to websites. Plop cannot know in advance which sites will ask you for a file, so it runs on http and https pages. On every page it does one thing: it checks whether what you clicked is a file upload control. If it is not, Plop does nothing and your click proceeds normally.
- Clipboard read. So that what you just copied can be offered as the first upload option.
- Storage and unlimited storage. So that your preferences, per-site settings and pinned files survive between sessions and updates. Unlimited storage lifts Chrome's default 10 MB cap, which a few pinned photos would otherwise exceed.
Deleting your data
You can remove pinned files individually from Plop's settings panel. Removing the extension from Chrome deletes everything Plop has stored, including preferences, per-site settings, pinned files and recents. There is nothing held anywhere else to delete.
Children
Plop is not directed at children and does not knowingly collect personal information from anyone, of any age.
